Insights on Influencer Monetization, Storytelling, and AI in the Spotlight from the Instagram Summit 2024

Recently, Brandlective attended the 2024 Instagram Summit, which brought together some fascinating voices in the world of content creation, influencer marketing, and the future of AI. Here are the highlights from Hank Green, Jenna Kutcher, Miqela (yes, an AI influencer!), and Ricky Sans, each of whom shared unique insights about where digital media is headed and how creators can shape their relationships with audiences.

Hank Green: The Complex Landscape of Influencer Monetization

Hank Green, one of the pioneering voices on YouTube, shared a candid look into the ever-evolving world of influencer monetisation. His insights were an eye-opener for anyone curious about what it’s really like to earn a living from creating content.

According to Hank, monetisation on YouTube is more consistent. For x number of views, a creator might earn around $2,000, whereas platforms like Instagram offer less predictable earnings. Payments vary month-to-month, much like stocks fluctuating in value. This brings a challenge for content creators who rely on these platforms for income; they can never be entirely sure how much they’ll earn from their next viral post.

Hank pointed out the emotional rollercoaster that comes with this uncertainty—how sometimes a video you poured your heart into will flop, while other times, the most unexpected posts take off.

Which got us thinking…

What does failure even mean in this context? Hank mentioned that the content closest to his heart often doesn’t perform well, while more “generic” content can soar.

Yet, from a marketing perspective, there’s a silver lining to creating a content plan that is both true to you and what the Instagram algorithm is willing to push in front of users: the loyal followers who engage with his personal content are his “ride-or-die” supporters. Even if these videos don’t rake in views, they help foster deeper connections with his audience—an invaluable asset in today’s fast-paced digital world.

Jenna Kutcher: Turning Life Stories into Heartfelt Marketing

Jenna Kutcher’s talk was all about tapping into the power of storytelling to create meaningful connections and, ultimately, drive sales. Jenna highlighted an important insight about how we process information: people remember information better when it’s presented in story form, which makes storytelling not only more memorable but also more effective in building trust with an audience.

For Jenna, the key is positioning the customer as the hero of the story. When you understand where your customer is in their journey, you’re able to guide them towards a solution (or sale) in a way that feels organic. She emphasised knowing the “What?” and “Why?”—in other words, understanding what your customer needs and why they’re seeking it.

Only then should you introduce the “How?”—which, of course, is the product or service you’re offering.

Jenna’s strategy revolves around highlighting transformation through stories, as she believes powerful testimonials can reinforce trust and credibility. Her takeaway piece of advice to aspiring storytellers?

Identify your top five transformation stories and tell them consistently. These stories remind your audience of the genuine impact your business can make.

Miqela: AI Influencer or Social Experiment?

Miqela’s presentation was… surreal. A virtual influencer who is an AI, Miqela sparked mixed reactions. Some people were fascinated by her “personality” and looks, while others found the experience unsettling, even dystopian. She claimed to have “deprogrammed herself” to be older than her original programming of 21, an admission that left many in the audience unsure how to respond.

In a bizarre twist, Miqela shared anecdotes about “falling in love” and facing discrimination for being AI, positioning herself as a social justice advocate, and recounting her experiences working in impoverished communities worldwide. Her words left some audience members feeling like they were part of a social experiment. With moderators present to steer the discussion and emphasise her positive impact, it was hard not to wonder: Are we witnessing a genuine attempt at AI-driven influence, or are we just guinea pigs in a marketing trial?

Ricky Sans: Memes, Algorithms, and Good Humor

Finally, Ricky Sans, Instagram’s “Head of Memes,” where the group chat was an all-star lineup of GIF masters and quality banter.

Known for his humorous insights into the digital space, Ricky discussed the mechanics of the Instagram algorithm—but with a lighthearted spin that made the conversation more enjoyable than technical. He also talked about everyone’s favourite topic, shadow banning, to which he adamantly swears hand over heart there is no such thing.

All and all, this conversation would have lived up to its potential with someone like Hank Green and Ricky Sans chatting together in a less formal format. Even so, Ricky made some great points about the power of memes and how a shared understanding of their meaning is a way to build community, grow ideas and say a lot with only a picture.

Final Thoughts

From monetisation challenges to the future of storytelling and AI’s role in society, each speaker highlighted the complexities of the digital age. Hank Green reminded us of the financial highs and lows of being a creator, while Jenna Kutcher demonstrated the power of connecting with an audience through personal stories. Miqela left us questioning the ethical implications of AI influencers, and Ricky Sans showed us the lighter side of navigating algorithms.

In a world where views, likes, and algorithms can feel overwhelming, these talks highlighted the importance of authenticity, connection, and humour—no matter what your marketing objectives are!
