Universal Music Group, home to megastars like Taylor Swift, announces its departure from TikTok. The decision comes after failed negotiations over compensation and AI usage rights, leaving TikTok users to bid farewell to their favourite tracks on the app as of 1st February.
Universal has accused TikTok of trying to push them into a cheaper deal, highlighting the platform’s attempt to promote the usage of songs without fairly compensating artists. On the other hand, TikTok expressed disappointment, explaining the loss of a valuable promotional avenue for its artists.
The news is disappointing for TikTok users, as their videos will now be muted, and their content will no longer be able to be fully appreciated.
Have you used UMG’s songs in your videos? What are your feelings about this move?
We understand that compensating artists for their work should be the number one priority, but we can’t help but feel disappointed that we can no longer access their music on this site, which pushed traffic towards streams.

In social media’s fast-changing landscape, YouTube remains on top, with Pew Research’s latest report reaffirming its leading online presence for videos. However, TikTok’s rise in the past two years signals a shift in user preferences.
While platforms like Facebook and Instagram maintain relevance, Pinterest emerges as a surprising contender, particularly in online shopping. Meanwhile, other sites struggle to gain traction, with X still lingering in the shadows despite its niche appeal.
Demographic trends have revealed intriguing insights. Younger demographics lean more towards platforms like Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok, while older age groups show less engagement.
What is your current social media fav? Do you spend your social media hours scrolling through TikTok, catching up on Instagram or reading posts on X?

In a move to give users more control over their messaging experience, Instagram introduces the option to disable read receipts for direct messages. Now, users can breathe a sigh of relief knowing they can avoid the dreaded “Seen” indicator and the pressure to respond promptly if they don’t have time or need to think about their answer without appearing to be ignoring the message.
Whether dodging unwarranted drama from friends or managing customer expectations for brands, this feature offers a welcome reprieve from the incessant ping of notifications.
C’mon, we’re all at least a little happy about this news!
